“Les Veilleurs” Ali Cherri and Laure Prouvost “Mère wee see”
12 September 2025

Friday, September 12 – 2:00 pm
Meeting at the MAC (Museum of Contemporary Art) for a guided visit of the exhibitions Les Veilleurs by Ali Cherri and Mère wee see by Laure Prouvost, with Stéphanie Airaud, curator at the MAC and exhibition commissioner.
The exhibition by Ali Cherri takes shape and life from two totems: Les Veilleurs (Gate Keepers), symbolizing fire and water, acquired in 2024 by the Museums of Marseille. On the occasion of these acquisitions, Ali Cherri—a Lebanese artist who participated in Manifesta 2021—was invited to select works from the Museums of Marseille’s collections that resonate with his sculptural and video work.
He designed a scenography as a dialogue, in which objects break free from encyclopedic discourse to become matter in itself, evoking emotion.
At the heart of Ali Cherri’s and Stéphanie Airaud’s choices are themes directly related to the totems: animality, the gaze, the face, sleep, vulnerability.
Laure Prouvost – Mère wee see: Laure Prouvost is a contemporary artist and video-maker based in Brussels. She is known for her installations that combine film, sculpture, tapestry, and language. The monumental installation she presents at the MAC is to be perceived, according to the artist, as a maternal and fertile figure. Together with Four For See Beauties, exhibited at the Vieille Charité Chapel, these installations summon the memories of those who inhabited this space and the Panier district over the past three centuries.
Visit free of charge, upon reservation.
